Medical Solutions State Pages: Georgia

Georgia Stamp

Medical Solutions’ new state pages will help you learn more about your next potential Travel Nursing location!

There are so many factors that can contribute to a Travel Nurse’s decision to take a job. One of the biggest factors for many Travelers is location, location, location!

The opportunity to explore a new city/state/region while working is one of the very coolest things and most awesome perks of Travel Nursing.

So, where do you want to go adventuring? (Or, should I say, where do you want to go next? Because, another great perk of Travel Nursing is being able to switch up your location often, if you choose.)

Do you want rural adventures or urban accoutrements? Majestic mountains or beautiful beaches? Historic sites or modern attractions?

To help our Travelers make the all-important choice of where to land their next assignment, Medical Solutions is launching a series of state pages. These pages are a great new resource that lend a peek into what a state is all about.

This month’s featured page is a state many folks have on their mind: Georgia!

On the Georgia page you’ll find:

  • Information and photos of popular attractions and culture
  • Fun state facts and stats
  • Data on licensure and in-demand specialties
  • Hot spots for Travel Nurse jobs in Georgia, plus an application to get started

Check out Medical Solutions’ fun, insightful new video series!

Medical Solutions is excited to introduce our new How NOT To Travel Nursing Videos.

We love to provide Travelers with excellent resources and we love to have fun. We created this video series so we could do both at once!

You will definitely prosper to your fullest when you have the resources and good advice on how to succeed in the industry.

We’ll be featuring a new How NOT To video and corresponding article each month in our newsletter. This month we’d like to share “How NOT to Choose a Travel Nursing Company.”

Congrats to June 2014’s Traveler of the Month and Rising Star!

Man with trophy

And the trophies go to … Amy R.. and Linda R.!

We’d like to send a big shout-out and congratulations to our June Traveler of the Month, Amy R., and also our Rising Star winner, Linda R.

Traveler of the Month Amy has been an RN for 28 years and was an LVN for five years prior. She’s spent the last 16 years in OR, but also has experience in ER, ICU/CCU, tele, med-surg, PACU, and even administration. Wow, talk about well-versed!

Amy, who begins a new assignment in Northern California this August, travels with her husband; he is retired and likes to “catch up on his reading, movies, and go for motorcycle rides” while Amy’s at work.

Amy (far right) unwinds with co-workers.

“We’re looking forward to visiting wine country,” says Amy. “Plus, it’s someplace my husband and I might retire to … Along with seeing new places and meeting new people, travel nursing allows my husband and me the opportunity to ‘try out’ a community while getting paid.”

The couple has been traveling together for nearly three years, and of the five states Amy has worked in — California, Arizona, Idaho, Washington, and Texas — their favorite spot was San Luis Obispo, California.

“It’s a friendly college town, near the coast, has a great farmers market, lots of laid back music venues, some wineries in the area, and Amtrak runs through town so you can travel north and south on the train,” says Amy.

She says her goal is be a co-worker that perm staff are sad to see go at the end of her contract. She advises Travelers to do their homework prior to an assignment, have a positive, friendly attitude, and take good care of themselves outside of work.

“The more helpful I am to my coworkers, the more they are willing to help me,” says Amy. “Be proactive about it: Ask ‘How can I help you?’ instead of waiting to be asked. If you need help, ask for it, and be specific. Don’t assume others know you need help. Genuinely thank others for their help.”

Rising Star Linda, CST, has been in nursing for more than 20 years, but began her first travel assignment at the end of March 2014.

She is already soaking up the awesome experiences Travel Nursing offers.

“The best thing about traveling is meeting new people and exploring the area,” Linda says.

Travel Nurse Linda

June’s Rising Star, Linda.

Although she a new to traveling, Linda’s already got some great advice for new or prospective Travelers.

“When going into a new hospital, remember that you are there to help them so just do your job and don’t get involved in any of the politics,” she says. “Just enjoy the freedom you have: meeting new people and taking in all the sights.”

Thanks again to Amy and Linda for being such great examples of Travelers and for providing excellent patient care everywhere they go!

Congrats to May 2014’s Traveler of the Month and Rising Star!

gold star made of gold stars

You each get a gold star, Barb H. and Jennifer H.!

Eternal thanks and huge kudos and congrats to our May Traveler of the Month, Barb H., and also our Rising Star winner, Jennifer H.

Traveler of the Month Barb has been an RN for 32 years, and she’s extra special for several reasons. Barb was in Omaha recently, where Medical Solutions is headquartered, and our staff was able to be there when she came to visit us and found out about her win. It was so fun to surprise Barb, and to celebrate her awesome work! Check it out — you may want to lower the volume at the beginning, our cheers for Barb got pretty loud.

Barb’s a true Travel Nurse pro, and has a great deal of experience. Her background is in ICU/ER, Home Health, Hospice, and currently PACU.

“I traveled in the late ’80s when cell phones and computers or GPS were not the norm,” she says. “Things are so much easier with technology.”

Travel Nurse Barb's dog Lucy

Lucy loves traveling alongside her owner, and Traveler of the Month for May 2014, Barb H.

She travels with her two companions, Kona, an 11-year-old chocolate lab, and Lucy, a 3-year-old rescue lab mix.

“They attend doggy daycare when I am at work and have adjusted well to the frequent changes. When I travel I have a hitch haul on the back of my SUV so they aren’t crowded in the back,” says Barb.

She says she really enjoys the Minneapolis area, for its “diversity, people, and the vibe of the city.” But she also looks forward to discovering new areas.

“I enjoy getting ‘lost’ in an area and finding my way back,” she says. “You never know what you’ll find along the way and I love figuring out what street or road intersects with that road. The dogs have been a great way to find trails and parks in an area.”

Travel Nurse Barb's dog Kona

Barb’s dog, Kona, also enjoys exploring.

Beyond exploring, Barb loves that Travel Nursing allows her to focus on what really matters.

“I love traveling mainly because I can avoid the politics and drama of a place and focus on patient care,” she says.

Barb has some really valuable tips for new Travelers: “Be flexible. Assignments and details can change in a heartbeat; you need to go with the flow and not get stressed. Always be courteous and gracious at an assignment. If three different people say the same thing to you thank each and every one of them. They are not doing it to belittle you they just don’t know what other people have told you. Show confidence in your skill, not arrogance, for that radiates to the staff nurses. Go do things with staff members if asked, a great way to see the area and form a friendship with the staff.”

Barb’s on her way back to the Minneapolis area in early July. Don’t forget to stop back and see us again in Omaha some time, Barb!

May’s Rising Star Jennifer H. has been a Certified Surgical Technologist for four years, has been traveling since June 2013, and is going on her third travel assignment. After a short vacation she’s off to an assignment in Iowa in July.

“I love it!” Jennifer says of life as a Traveler, adding, “I have enjoyed each and every one of my assignments because I have learned so much. The people I have met and the knowledge I have gained has made me the person and the tech I am.”

Travel Nurse Jen in OMaha

Jennifer visited Omaha’s famed Henry Doorly Zoo, with another Medical Solutions Traveler, Cindy D.

Jennifer loves the aspect of Travel Nursing that allows her to continue developing her skills, knowledge, and experience as a healthcare professional.

“The best thing about traveling is meeting new people and learning new skills and techniques, because I believe that my way might not be the best or only way to do something,” she says.

Rising Star Jennifer’s advice for new Travelers?

“When traveling, always be open minded to different techniques and learn anything you can from others,” she says. “With that, be prepared to teach others the knowledge that you have. As you come into a new assignment and facility, be honest about your training, be flexible to do anything — which includes cleaning — yes, cleaning, and be positive in any situation.”

Thanks so much again for your superior work on assignment, Barb and Jennifer! We hope you enjoy your prizes and awesome bragging rights.

Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship Winners

Student nurse on laptop.

Congrats to the 2014 Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship Winners: Alonso B., Racheal D., and Amanda W.!

Medical Solutions would like to extend a major congratulations to our 2014 Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship winners! Drumroll, please …….

  • Alonso B., Sophomore, Carrington College in Reno, NV
  • Racheal D., Freshman, Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA
  • Amanda W., Junior, Houston Community College in Houston, TX

This trio of scholarly aspiring nurses has each won a $1,000 scholarship towards their academic expenses. In addition to meeting other contest criteria, Alonso, Racheal, and Amanda each had excellent answers to the essay question: “What will you do as a nurse to ensure you always provide exceptional patient care?”

Alonso wrote that he’d always strive to continue learning nursing skills and theory, adding: “I will never forget the value of compassion.” He continued, writing that he would “never forget that behind that stage 4 cancer, there is a human being. I will treat my patients with the same care and kindness that I would my own mother or brother. Being supportive and empathetic should be as high of a priority for nurses as washing their hands. As my nursing instructors have told me, ‘Remember, we are treating patients, not diseases.’”

Racheal echoed Alonso’s sentiment, writing: “Exceptional care is being part of a human interaction. … As a nurse and even now as a student nurse, my personal goal and purpose is to give efficient, competent care, in a holistic way. Not just caring for the disease process, or management of the problem, but being an ear to listen, a therapeutic touch on the hand to comfort, and clarify or reinforce when they felt overwhelmed with the news they received.” She continued, writing: “Exceptional nurses take an extra five minutes to listen, even if that means they chart off the clock,” also touching on the importance of caring for and comforting a patient’s family. “For me, providing care as a nurse is a responsibility that requires knowledge, advocacy, and a heart for the hurting,” she wrote.

Amanda detailed a horrific accident she suffered at age 18, which landed her in the ICU. Despite the trauma, she wrote that the accident was a pivotal moment through which realized she aspired to be a nurse. “As a patient,” she wrote, “I learned that exceptional care was not just in the form of medical orders, but in the form of interactive care.” She wrote about Mary, a nurse who served her, and who became her “nursing role model.” She wrote of Mary: “She was my biggest advocate, my constant friend, and my beacon of hope.” Amanda’s goal in providing patient care is to “be someone’s Mary.”

Congrats again to our three Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship winners, and we absolutely loved reading through all of the many impressive entries and essays!

Medical Solutions sponsors and hosts the Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship as a part its annual Nurses Week celebration, in order to support the education and development of tomorrow’s nurses, nurse leaders and educators.
