Happy Thanksgiving, Medical Solutions Travelers!

Family All Together At Christmas DinnerAlthough the turkey is delicious, the football plentiful, and the family time splendid, we all know the best part of this holiday is being able to express gratitude for the important people and great things in our lives. It just fills you with warm, fuzzy goodness to take a moment to focus on what you’re grateful for, and when we take that moment here at Medical Solutions the first thing we think of is you.

We are so grateful to work with such an amazing group of talented, hard-working, and downright fun Travelers. We’re grateful for the many lives you save, the comfort and guidance you offer patients, and the professionalism you exhibit in every facility. Whether you’ll be in the unit (if so, don’t forget our Holiday Bonus) or around the table this Thursday, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for all that you do!

Amazing Brave Video!

Brave Video

Thank you, U of M, for representing nursing so well!

Hey everybody, you’ll have to excuse me, I have something in my eye …

I must admit I shed a tear — or 20! — when I watched the University of Minnesota’s Amplatz Children’s Hospital viral YouTube video, “Brave.” Nurses, administrators, and other staff join young patients in lip syncing along to Sara Bareilles’ song “Brave” — a catchy, poppy song with the chorus, “I just wanna see you be brave.”

Watching the joy on the faces of these young, strong kids, as well as the dedication and care apparent from the staff members is truly inspirational. With other, sometimes questionable, portrayals of nurses cluttering up headlines this year, it is fantastic to see a video with such substance and understanding of what nurses do become popular.

In the video staff and patients frolic, get silly, and dance. At one point young patients hold up cards that read, “Be brave,” “Be courageous,” and “Be strong.” Staff and nurses hold up cards that read, “Stay fighting,” “Stay positive,” and “Stay courageous.”

One YouTube commenter wrote, “This was absolutely beautiful … I don’t cry often but this truly inspiring video got me going. God bless those kids and god bless the wonderful nurses and doctors who devote your time and care to making these kids have the best life they can while in this tragic circumstance. Thank you.”

Bareilles surprised some of the video’s masterminds in the middle of an interview with HLN, and she told them, “I was sent this video by a friend of a friend who lives in Minnesota, and I watched it late at night and immediately my eyes welled up. It’s moment like this that reminds me of the importance of music, and I can’t think of a more perfect incarnation of this song. It’s exactly the kind of thing that gives the life to this song that we were hoping for.”

The video comes to a close with more nurses and staff holding up the messages: “Supporting the fighters,” “Admiring the survivors,”  “Honoring the taken,” and “Never ever giving up hope.”

At Medical Solutions we never forget that what we do is help our nurses provide just this kind of inspiring, life-changing care. Thanks, U of M, and thanks to all of our awesomely brave Travelers! Check out the original video and Bareilles’ Skype session below.

Congrats to Idea Box Winner, Kristy!

IdeaBox-Head-winner399x296Big time congratulations and a major thank you to our 2013 Idea Box winner, Kristy O! Kristy’s suggestion that we open a Medical Solutions store was the brightest of all the bright ideas we received this year.

With her help we recently launched Stitches, where you can purchase all kinds of Medical Solutions gear, including T-shirts, hoodies, hats, scrubs, pet gear, and more MS swag!

Kristy’s suggestion read: “Have a company store where we can get company logo products that we can use at work, scrubs, jackets, OR caps, etc. (I’ve been shopping for a fleece vest for work … hint, hint.)”

We can definitely take a hint, Kristy. Especially such a smart one!

We opened Stitches in October 2013, with the intention to provide our Travelers with great products at great prices. In order to meet that goal, Medical Solutions is not making any profit off of the store. The only markups go straight to production and vendor costs. Also, we look forward to receiving our 50th order at Stitches, at which point we will donate $500 to Habitat for Humanity.

For her inspired idea, Kristy has won a $100 Amazon gift card. Thanks again, Kristy, we really appreciate you!

Do you have a great idea about how Medical Solutions can better serve you and your fellow Travelers? Click here to submit your own fabulous schemes, brainstorms, and proposals, for the chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

We can’t follow through with every submission but we do consider all of them and we love receiving your feedback. Our Travelers are a bright bunch!

Medical Solutions Statement on MTV’s “Scrubbing In”

ScrubbIn CastA few months ago we heard that MTV was going to be making a reality show that focused on Travel Nurses. Originally titled “Nurse Nation” and later changed to “Scrubbing In,” we were cautiously optimistic about the new show. As a Travel Nurse agency we were excited about the possibility that this new program would shine a light on the hard work of nurses within the travel industry, as well as other related topics such as the nurse shortage and the importance of patient care and safe nurse to patient ratios.

Now that we’ve been able to watch a couple of episodes of the highly publicized show we felt the need to express our disappointment in this show’s portrayal of Travel Nurses. As an agency that works hard to serve our Travelers and create lasting, personal bonds with them, we are disheartened by this portrayal and want to express that this is not how we think Travel Nurses should be shown as it is not representative of the hard-working, focused Travelers that we work with.

Beyond that we want to emphasize the point that what you see on “Scrubbing In” is not what we do nor does it reflect the high caliber of Travelers that we staff at Medical Solutions. We accept only the most qualified and professional Travelers, and send them through a 28-point screening process that covers professional, license, education, background, identification, and health requirements. We know that safe patient care depends on the Travelers we staff, and by extension, that it depends upon us.

As far as the personal off-the-job choices made by the cast, we do not judge them for that. But on the job some of the things depicted in the show, such as Travel Nurses arriving on a job without proper licensing or playing around out of their unit, would not fly with our highly professional Career Consultants and Travelers.

We hope that “Scrubbing In” goes on to portray more of the cast practicing nursing and less drama and, as the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) called it, “demeaning” footage of the featured Travel Nurses.

NACNS has joined National Nurses United, American Nurses Association, Canadian Nurses Association and a petition on in urging MTV to cancel the show. NACNS President Carol Manchester wrote, “This program portrays nurses in a disrespectful and unfair light for purely salacious purposes.  We urge you in the strongest possible terms to cancel it. As the largest group of health care professionals, nurses are central to providing and improving our nation’s health care. As you must be aware, the United States is facing a shortage of nurses and there are efforts underway across the country to encourage young people to enter nursing and increase enrollment in nursing schools. A television program that intentionally reinforces negative and antiquated stereotypes about nurses and that shows them in the worst possible light does nothing to support those efforts, and, in fact, serves to do the opposite.”

And it’s not just nurses who think the show is a miss, AJ Marechal, TV Reporter for Variety, said that the show, “struggles tonally, as scenes of the nurses working with sick patients are largely overshadowed by pointless, aggressive arguments between cast members.”

If any of our readers have watched the show, we’d love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments!

Congrats to September’s Nurse of the Month and Rising Star!

winning businessmanLet’s hear it for Medical Solutions September 2013 Nurse of the Month, Julianne D., and also for our Rising Star winner, Darlene K.!

Julianne is currently on assignment in Pennsylvania, has been in nursing for 13 years, and has completed 14 assignments with us with no terminations.

“I left the cardiac cath lab in Delaware to begin my travel adventure,” says Julianne. “A friend and I traveled to the same or close assignments for the first two years. The last 5 years I’ve continued exploring the country on my own. My favorite location was Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was beautiful in wintertime — snow covered mountains surround the city; plenty of skiing available.”

She also told us that her favorite thing about traveling is being able to pick up and change her location as needed, such as five years ago when her stepfather was ill and she was able to take an assignment an hour away from him and her mom. She also adds, “I love the mountains [and being] able to go where my interests and hobbies can be found.”

September Rising Star Darlene is being recognized for her first assignment in Kansas City where she fulfilled two 13-week contracts. She may be new to traveling but she got her first nursing license in 1985 in Illinois. She later went on to practice in Missouri for 10 years, among things.

Darlene says Kansas City is her favorite place to work: “My sister, her family, and many cousins live in the area and it was great being able to visit with them over the past six months. The excitement that a large city brings is exhilarating. I had ample time to explore the museums, fountains, drive-in movies, and go to a Royals baseball game.”

Her favorite thing about travel nursing is being able to live in areas she may not have been able to check  out as well just via a vacation.

“The ability to get to know the culture, the people, and the everyday things that makes each locale special becomes richer, than just being a tourist to the area,” says Darlene. “Having opportunities to work in different facilities enhances our nursing skills and leads to better adaptability to the ever-changing health care needs.”

Congrats to September’s Nurse of the Month and Rising Star winners — sounds like you are doing it right both on and off the job, and we appreciate your excellence!

Medical Solutions Opens New Online Store, Stitches!

StitchesAt Medical Solutions, we love sending our Travelers all kinds of fun gear, or as the kids call it these days, “swag.”

We’ve created so much great apparel — from t-shirts and hoodies, to hats, scrubs, and more — that our office was starting to overflow from it all! Plus, Travelers loved our Medical Solutions gear so much that they wanted access to more. So, we decided to create an online store, called Stitches, where Travelers could go to find the latest in Medical Solutions swag.

Stitches features a variety of gear that makes great gifts for yourself, the nurse in your life, or anybody who appreciates creative, quality goods. Available now at Stitches are ball caps and stocking caps, hilarious nurse-themed t-shirts, polos, hoodies, jackets, coffee cups, pet gear, water bottles, lunch bags, scrubs, and more.

We want Stitches’ gear to remain affordable for you, so we are running the store without making any profit off of it. Of course, we have to cover the production and vendor costs, but outside of those we are offering these items to our customers with no additional markup.

Want to hear something even more awesome? Medical Solutions will donate $500 to Habitat for Humanity after Stitches receives its 50th order.

Click here to head on over to Stitches and get started filling your virtual shopping cart. I highly recommend the Bigfoot T-shirt that compels you to “Always Believe in Yourself.”

Congrats, Scott, for being included in the 2013 Staffing Top 100!

We are super duper happy to share the news that our co-founder, CEO, CFO, fearless leader, and all-around great guy, Scott Anderson, has been named to Staffing Industry Analysts’ Staffing 100 list for 2013. Congrats, Scott! We think you are just the bee’s knees and it’s great for you to be recognized on such an important list.

According to Staffing Industry Analysts, this list features, “The 100 most influential people in the staffing industry.”

Scott’s page on the Top 100 reads, “As co-founder and head of Medical Solutions L.L.C., Scott Anderson has taken the company to new heights. Under Anderson’s leadership, Medical Solutions was among the first staffing companies to achieve The Joint Commission healthcare staffing services certification. With its acquisition of On Assignment’s travel nurse division in February 2013, Medical Solutions became the third-largest travel nurse provider in the U.S. It was named a Best Staffing Firm to Work For by Staffing Industry Analysts in 2012 and 2013, among other accolades. Anderson also serves on the Greater Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics board.”

Anderson is ever-humble regarding this mega-honor, saying, “I’m so honored to be recognized by Staffing Industry Analysts. However, the real credit should be given to our great staff and nurses who have established a culture and commitment to service that allows Medical Solutions to thrive in the industry and set a solid example for others.”

For he’s a jolly good fellow, indeed. Congrats again, Scott. And thank you so much for all that you do for Medical Solutions, its employees and Travelers, and the healthcare staffing industry in general!
