Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2016 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Medical Solutions is so very proud of and thankful for our 2016 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award winners.

We know that all of our Travelers and Career Consultants are the very best in the business, and we look forward to these annual awards as a way to recognize several of our top team members for everything they do in the pursuit of providing great patient care nationwide.

Read on to learn more about these incredible 2016 winners!

Patricia Travel Nurse

Congrats to our Traveler of the Year, Patricia “Trish” O., pictured her with her dog, Chinook, and her youngest son, Eric.

Traveler of the Year

Congrats to Patricia “Trish” O., our 2016 Traveler of the Year, who won an Apple iPad Air, a $50 Amazon gift card, and some cupcakes and other yummy baked goods delivered for her and her whole unit! Trish works with Career Consultant Aaron B. who thinks she is just the bee’s knees.

Traveler of the Year is chosen annually from the pool of 12 Traveler of the Month winners from throughout the year. Trish is an RN who specializes in Geriatrics, with experience in Rehab and Med Surg, and she was the June 2016 Traveler of the Month. She’s been traveling about four years now, but she’s been in the nursing field in one way or another since age 16!

“I really enjoy seeing different states and meeting new people,” she says. “I also like learning new things in the nursing field as they come along.”

Trish traveled with her significant other, Larry, until he sadly passed away in June 2016. She now hits the road with her Alaskan Husky, Chinook, who she says is great company.

Trish’s focus in nursing is “just to take care of people and hope I make a difference.” In her free time, Trish likes to crochet and write stories — she hopes to get a story published one day and we hope she finds plenty of inspiration through her travels!

Here’s some great advice from Trish for new or aspiring Travel Nurses:

“One thing that I’ve found works for me in my travels, is to make the unit I am on mine,” she says. “I learn everything I can about the unit, the workings, policies, everything, so when a patient asks a question I can answer them thoughtfully instead of just saying ‘I’m only a Traveler and I don’t know.’ I’m willing to learn anything they’re willing to teach me — instead of saying, ‘I’m just a Traveler and I don’t need to know that.’ I just like to learn and no one is too old to learn anything. I feel I learn something new every day and it’s great!”

We are SO thankful for you, Trish! You are an amazing caregiver and one of the strongest people we know. Congrats!

Joe and Crew 300x169 - Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2016 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

2016 Service That Inspires Award Winner, Joe W., and his crew are all smiles at the beach in Marcos Island!

Service That Inspires Award Winner

Joe and Brennen

Joe and his partner Brennen are an amazing RN duo!

Congrats to our 2016 Service That Inspires Award Winner, Joe W., who won an Amazon Echo Tap, a $50 Amazon gift card, and dinner catered in for him and his unit!

Joe is a BSN, RN working in ICU and he travels with Career Consultant Jen L. Here’s some of what Jen had to say in her nomination of Joe:

“Joe is one of the most amazing nurses I have ever worked with! Joe came to me wanting to travel along with his partner who is also an ICU RN. At the hospital where we found a job for Joe, the manager said in the interview that she does not hire traveling pairs. Joe and his partner decided Joe should take the job anyway and his partner would join at a later date on another assignment. Just weeks after Joe’s arrival, the manager changed her mind and his partner is now working there with him based on his work ethic, his knowledge, and how well he gets along with the staff!

On multiple occasions, patient families have sung the praises of Joe’s professionalism, character, and his empathy for their situations. One family member even handed Joe his very own nomination for a Daisy award, not knowing that Joe wasn’t supposed to know about it and it was to go to the manager.

Another family member who lost his father while in the ICU wrote a letter to the VP of Nursing Services, CEO, COO, and CMO praising Joe for his care of the family and helping them through the most difficult decision of removing the family member off of life support.

Joe is the nurse that I would want taking care of myself or my family member. He is funny, kind, caring, compassionate, and he is exactly the kind of nurse that we want representing Medical Solutions.”

Bailey loves hitting the road with her dads!

Joe has a total of 18 years of patient care experience; he was an EMS for 15 years and has been in nursing for three years. He’s currently on assignment in Indiana, where he says “the people are awesome!” Joe travels with his partner Brennen, who is also a Travel Nurse, and their English Springer Spaniel, Bailey.

Joe says the best thing about Travel Nursing is “meeting new people and learning new things.” Here’s his advice for succeeding as a Travel Nurse.

Definitely keep an open mind and be open to change. Being flexible with schedules and patient assignments helps beyond measure! A positive attitude and patience will go a long way.”

Thank you, Joe, for being such a great nurse and for providing service that inspires!

Recruiter of the Year Winners

Congrats to our amazing 2016 Recruiter of the Year winners, Stephanie Balkovec and Jon Laubert!

Stephanie and Jon were chosen as 2016 Recruiter of the Year winners based on glowing nominations from their happy Travelers. These two represent exactly what it means to be a Medical Solutions Career Consultant: They truly care about their Travelers and are always there for them any time of day or night, and in any matter personal or professional. Many of their Travelers said that Jon and Steph are not just great recruiters (though, make no mistake, they are that too!), but that they are also really great friends to their nurses before, during, and after their assignments!

Here are some comments from Stephanie’s Traveler nominations:

Recruiter of the Year

This is Stephanie back in the day. She was born adorable! Congrats, Stephanie!

“Stephanie is a rock star!! She is on her game 100% of the time and I can depend on her no matter what! She is also extremely kind, thoughtful, and seems to check in when I need her the most! Our working styles are very similar and because of this she has helped make my travel dreams come true!! I am SO GRATEFUL for her!!

“Stephanie works extremely hard with me as a team to make sure I have the contracts and assignments I want. She continues to meets my needs as a professional Travel Nurse with a personal touch. As my Career Consultant, she is a great listener, understands and caters to my likes, dislikes, and any concerns I may have. I have had many recruiters, in the past with different companies, none like Stephanie Balkovec and Medical Solutions. The absolute best!”

“Stephanie has been so wonderful during the last nine months of correspondence. Even before I officially signed with Medical Solutions she spent countless hours answering my questions via phone and email. Now, during my first assignment, she is always available and quick to respond with continuous questions. I couldn’t ask for this transition to go any smoother. And she sent me a lil’ sweet treat after my first month. It’s always great to receive mail so far away from home. Thank you Stephanie!”

Here are some comments from Jon’s Traveler nominations:

Recruiter of the Year

And here’s Lil’ Jon back in the day! Congrats, Jon!

“Jon is always willing to do anything and everything in his power to help me succeed. He’s available 24/7 for anything I needed help with. Whether it’s a friendly reminder for a timesheet so that I got paid on time or trying to get me out of a sticky situation, he was always there! Very respectful of the fact that I work nights as well. A huge plus for a night shifter!! He was Robin to my Batman and I’ll always be grateful for his service and expertise!”

“As a newer Traveler with tons of questions, Jon has always come to my rescue. He makes me feel like I truly am top priority even when I know he is busy. He works very hard to get me the best job possible and I truly appreciate everything he does.  You truly have a winner here and you should never let him go!!!”

“Jon is more than my recruiter and he always goes above and beyond. He’s always accessible and I feel like it’s not just his job but his mission to make sure I always have what I need. He’s there to share in my successes, but more importantly he is a supportive friend when I need a someone to vent my frustrations to. I never feel like he is rushed or distracted when we speak and it feels like I’m dealing with an old friend who’s genuinely interested in what is going on while I’m fulfilling my assignment. Medical Solutions is a better company because of his dedication to his Travelers. I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with Jon and look forward to many years of successful assignments because of his dedication.”

Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship Winners for 2016

Congrats Isabelle!

Congrats, Isabelle L.!

Let’s hear it for Medical Solutions’ Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship winners for 2016!

The lucky and hardworking nurse scholars who aced this year’s competition are:

  • Katherine W., Junior, UNMC College of Nursing in Nebraska
  • Isabelle L., Senior, Alma College in Michigan
  • Katelyn S., Junior, Concordia University in Wisconsin

Medical Solutions hosts the Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship Contest as part of our annual Nurses Week celebration. We believe this is an important way for us to help support the nursing pipeline in the face of a national nurse shortage and ensure the development of the next generation of nurses, nurse leaders, and nurse educators.

In addition to other scholarship criteria, each entrant wrote a 250-word essay answering the question: “How do you feel that being a Nurse will change your perspective on life?”

Medical Solutions received SO many amazing entries — thank you to everyone who entered! In the end, our team of judges determined that Katherine, Isabelle, and Katelyn were at the head of the class. Here are their awesome essays.

Congrats, Katherine W.!

Congrats, Katherine W.!

“When I began nursing, I thought I knew what compassion was. Compassion is a nice word and the word prompted me to envision Clara Barton mopping up the bloody wounds of a union soldier. But now I see that compassion runs far deeper. Compassion is treating the patient calling you every name in the book with respect and dignity. Compassion is answering the call light that just went off even though you haven’t sat down all day. Compassion is taking the time to talk with your patient diagnosed with a terminal illness. Compassion is loving in the face of difficulty and sacrificing the needs of oneself for the sake of another. Not only has nursing redefined the meaning of compassion for me, it has taught me so much about how great the impact of ones’ actions can be. Who would have known that a respectful bed bath is able to provide a person with dignity? Who would have known that a nurse’s confidence and knowledge would reassure a patient frightened to their wit’s end? Who would have known that the nurses’ smile would be a person’s last memory before they pass away? It is both a privilege and a responsibility that nurses are in a prime position to have an enormous impact on the lives of those around them. Nursing is redefining what I thought I knew about life. Nursing changes the way I view the world. Nursing changes the nurse forever.” — Katherine W.

“Nearing the end of my studies, my exposure to nursing has changed my perspective on a number of practical things: I can now hold my pee longer than any human should and obsessively make beds with hospital corners, even at home when I don’t need to. Triviality aside, nursing has made monumental and fundamental changes to the way I perceive life. I thought I knew what love was, yet what I knew as love cannot compare to the emotion I’ve seen in a woman, back bent with advanced age, saying goodbye to her only sister. Companions since birth, she reassures her sister it’s OK to go, with the faith that they’ll both be OK. I thought I knew what it was to be fearless. But in truth, I have only begun to understand what it is to be unafraid, whether it’s of blood, vomit, or finding the courage to care for an individual in need of compassion and understanding as much as nursing expertise. I thought I already knew what it was to be an advocate, yet my experience of nursing has shown me the fierceness needed when advocating for patients, as well as for myself. I thought I understood gratitude. This profession will show me great sorrow, and sometimes great joy. How can I not be grateful for all of my advantages: good health, education, a supportive family? Nursing has and will make me wise beyond my years. It will make me a more committed and compassionate individual.” — Isabelle L.

Congrats, Katelyn S.!

Congrats, Katelyn S.!

“Laryngotracheobronchitis. Epistaxis. Easy medical terminology, right? But define this term: servant leadership. Sure, check my giant nursing textbooks but I am fairly certain servant leadership will not be mentioned. It is not a body part or pathological process, but rather, the simple yet significant philosophy that is transforming into the core of not only my nursing education and career, but my life. In the rawest form, servant leadership means putting other’s needs above mine. It embraces selfless caring and a dedicated attitude of compassion to fuel the vigilant care I provide. However, the real challenge rises as servant leadership carries me from clinics into communities where I can make a positive impact daily. I see servant leadership guiding how I treat my neighbors, friends, family, and even individuals who are deeply difficult to care for. Committing to servant leadership will change my life perspective as I move beyond listening not just to heart and lung sounds, but auscultating patient’s unspoken needs. Sadly, these needs are not easily met. To nurse leaders, holistic care means considering abuse, poverty, racism, addiction, malnutrition, and depression as broken parts of individuals that need just as much care as a broken bone. In my future as a nurse, I feel called to alleviate these tragedies like never before. Even when the only treatment available is my smile, my hand to hold, my shoulder to cry on, or better yet, a selfless presence. I thrive off the purpose nursing has and will give my life. — Katelyn S.

Congrats to Katherine, Isabelle, and Katelyn, our Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship winners for 2016!

As we wait for Nurses Week and the scholarship to roll back around on the calendar, aspiring nurses and Travel Nurses to be are welcome to visit, where we offer you all kinds of resources, info, and fun that can help you unlock the wide, wonderful world of Travel Nursing!

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

We’d like to say a big thanks and congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners.

Medical Solutions is blessed with the best Travelers and Career Consultants around. We love to celebrate their awesomeness and mutual dedication to facilitating excellent patient care, and these annual awards are just one great way to do that.

Read on to learn more about the amazing, inspiring 2015 winners!

Traveler of the Year

Congrats and kudos to Barbara H., our 2015 Traveler of the Year, who was awarded with a Sonos Play 1 Bluetooth Speaker, a $50 Amazon gift card, and lunch catered in for her and her unit!

Traveler of the Year is chosen annually from the pool of 12 Traveler of the Month winners from throughout the year. Barb was the November 2015 Traveler of the Month — but guess what else? Barb was also our May 2014 Traveler of the Month, and we were able to surprise her with that good news in person. Check it out! (But mind your volume button at you watch — the cheers got pretty loud for Barb!)

Barb is a nursing vet of 33 years with experience in ICU/ER, Home Health, Hospice, and PACU. She began traveling in the late ’80s and says traveling has become so much easier with the increased technology like smartphones, computers, and GPS. Barb travels with her canine companions, Kona and Lucy.

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Barb’s dog Kona is one of her adventuring companions.

“I love the challenge of coming to a new area and hospital and learning their processes,” says Barb. “It keeps my brain young. I want to thank my recruiter Ronnie E. for being my guide through this adventure for the past three years. Traveling is not all roses but if you are up for something different it is fun.”

Barb’s Career Consultant Ronnie E. praises her “phenomenal attitude” and he says it makes her a joy to work with.

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Lucy also loves an adventure!

“Barb always gets great reviews from hospitals and personnel,” he says. “You can just tell by talking with her that she really cares about her job. We have a mutual trust and respect for one another. I LOVE having Barb on the team. She is definitely an MVP in my book.”

For new or aspiring Travel Nurses, Barb shared some fabulous advice with us when she won her first Traveler of the Month award back in 2014:

“Be flexible. Assignments and details can change in a heartbeat; you need to go with the flow and not get stressed. Always be courteous and gracious at an assignment. If three different people say the same thing to you thank each and every one of them. They are not doing it to belittle you they just don’t know what other people have told you. Show confidence in your skill, not arrogance, for that radiates to the staff nurses. Go do things with staff members if asked, a great way to see the area and form a friendship with the staff.”

Thanks for the great advice and dedication to patient care, Barb, and congrats on a well-deserved award!

Services That Inspires Award Winner

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Service That Inspires Award winner, Sara O., more than makes the cut for her patients!

The 2015 Service That Inspires Award winner is Sara O., RN, BSN, OCN. Like Barb, Sara was awarded with a Sonos Play 1 Bluetooth Speaker, a $50 Amazon gift card, and lunch catered in for her and her unit!

Sara is an Oncology nurse, currently on assignment in Idaho, who’s been in nursing for eight years and traveling for about three years. Her Career Consultant Derek F. nominated Sara for the Service That Inspires Award because of her day-to-day commitment to patient care and a very special story from her recent Seattle assignment.

“Sara’s level of patient care is out of this world,” says Derek. “The passion and energy she puts forth comes from a place within that is genuine and truly heartfelt. I’ve been lucky to have worked with her, but she has also turned out to be a great friend. It’s people like her that are positively infectious to work with.”

As for that very special story … we’ll let Sara tell it in her own words:

“I was working in Seattle and had a 20-year-old kid with lymphoma. She always had the best attitude and we instantly bonded. She would bring some of her family members and sometimes her boyfriend and we always had a good time while she was getting her treatments. Well, one day she came in to my clinic and told me she was starting to lose her hair. I told her that she needed to have a shaving party and invite all her family and friends over and shave off her hair. Then I said that if she decided to have a shaving party, I would come and she could shave my head first … so that’s what we did! On the day of the shaving party, we took some before and after pictures and three other people besides myself decided to participate. Her boyfriend, her uncle, and a dear family friend that had shoulder length hair. My patient did the honors, shaving my head first, followed by the rest of the participants. She was last; each person took turns and I did the honors of completing the job. It is a day I will always remember, with a patient I will never forget.”

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Before …

Sara obviously truly cares for her patients, but she also loves the adventure and flexibility afforded to her through her career on Travel Nursing.

“Travel Nursing is a great way to LIVE and not just exist. You explore, experience, love, and learn. One of my favorite things currently is that I get to live close to my grandparents, which is the first time my entire life that has been the case,” she says. “Also, I love working for Medical Solutions … and that isn’t just because I won an award. This company has really changed my life, and as long as I travel, I will never work for another company again.”

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Recruiter of the Year Winners

Congrats to our awesome 2015 Recruiter of the Year winners: Brad Bell and Jen Lyman!

Congrats to Medical Solutions’ 2015 Traveler of the Year, Service That Inspires, and Recruiter of the Year Award Winners!

Congrats, Jen and Brad! You really are recruiter royalty!

These two exemplify what it means to be a Medical Solutions Career Consultant; they are great communicators, always available for their Travelers, and always keep Travelers’ best interests at the forefront of everything they do! Brad and Jen were chosen as the 2015 Recruiters of the Year based upon some really great Traveler nominations.

Here are a few of Brad’s nominations from his Travelers:

“Brad has definitely gone above and beyond my expectations for a recruiter. He shows a genuine concern for making sure I find the right fit for what I’m looking for, sets realistic expectations, and even checks in to make sure things are going well and I’m adjusting to my new assignment. It’s very evident that he takes a lot of pride in what he does and ensures that he advocates for the nurses he works with.”

“Brad is always on your team. He goes above and beyond and makes this a fun and rewarding journey.”

“Brad has always said he considered his nurses family, but this year he really showed it to me. When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, Brad did everything he could to help. At one point I thought I would even break my contract early to go home. Brad was completely supportive even if it created difficulties in his job. I was able to finish the contract, and Brad helped get me a contract a couple hours from home. He regularly checks in on me and my family during dad’s treatments. He’s the best!”

Here are a few of Jen’s nominations from her Travelers:

“Jen is honest about what to expect and listens to what I want in an assignment. She never tries to push you onto something you’re not interested in. She always gets back to me quickly and is always very helpful if I ever have any questions. I love having her as a recruiter and would recommend her to anyone!”

“Jen has become more than just my recruiter — she is also my friend. She only presents jobs that she knows will fit my needs and interests. She is always ready to answer questions, solve problems, or just let me vent. While I am on assignment she checks on me frequently — I never feel alone. Jen is the reason I stay with Medical Solutions. She has made each travel experience the best it can be.”

“I just love Jen! She really takes care of her nurses and ensures that when you have questions they’re answered promptly any time of the day. She communicates clearly and considerately, and there’s just something about her that’s intrinsically honest —and that’s hard to find in this industry. I never have to second guess anything she tells me and that’s invaluable. I also like that she works to get me competitive rates because while rapport is good, competitive compensation is imperative to a great, long term relationship.”
