Watching Christmas Movies

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, or you’re just down to party for New Year’s, these 33 holiday movies will get you in the spirit!

Throughout much of the country, the cold of winter calls for bountiful blankets and copious covers, which tend to go great with movie marathons! And, during this festive time of year, what better fare to snuggle up with than a Holiday flick? Even if it’s still 70° and sunny in your location, here are 33 Holiday movies Travel Nurses will love (in no particular order):

  1. A Christmas Story — Considered the ultimate modern classic by many, this 1983 comedy brought leg lamps, bunny suits, and the term “You’ll shoot your eye out!” into fashion.
  2. The Muppet Christmas Carol — Everybody’s favorite motley crew, The Muppets, take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
  3. The Nightmare Before Christmas — Tim Burton’s musical fantasy takes viewers from “Halloween Town” to “Christmas Town.”
  4. Eight Crazy Nights — Although it’s an animated feature, Adam Sandler’s musical comedy focusing on the Hanukkah season is an adults-only affair.
  5. Bad Santa — Also meant for adults, Billy Bob Thornton stars as an alcoholic, thieving Santa, in this comedy caper.
  6. Elf — Will Ferrell charms as one of Santa’s elves who travels to New York City to meet his biological father, delivering childlike Christmas cheer everywhere he goes.
  7. Mixed Nuts — Hilarity and hijinks ensue in this Nora Ephron-directed screwball comedy set in and around a crisis hotline at Christmastime. Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rob Reiner, Rita Wilson, Juliette Lewis, Anthony LaPaglia, Jon Stewart, Parker Posey, and others star.
  8. Gremlins — A cautionary tale for those looking for unusual Christmas gifts, this classic ’80s monster mash is set against a Holiday backdrop.Gremlins
  9. A Charlie Brown Christmas — One of the season’s most beloved traditions, for kids of all ages.
  10. The Polar Express — Take a trip to the North Pole, as seen through a child’s eyes, in this computer-animated fantasy.
  11. Home for the Holidays — Technically a Thanksgiving movie, but this comedy, directed by Jodie Foster and starring Holly Hunter, is a great examination of family festivities.
  12. The Black Candle — This award-winning documentary on Kwanzaa is narrated by the late Maya Angelou.
  13. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation — Chevy Chase and family are back and in the spirit of the season in this third installment of National Lampoon’s Vacation series — a major crowd favorite.
  14. One Magic Christmas — An angel (played by Harry Dean Stanton) helps show a hardworking, downtrodden mom the true meaning of Christmas in this ’80s classic.
  15. Home Alone — When Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind by his family who are traveling to Europe, he must protect their home from a pair of bungling burglars.
  16. Die Hard — A Christmas party turns nightmarish for an NYPD officer (Bruce Willis) when he must save his wife and other hostages being threatened by a terrorist group.
  17. Love, Actually — A mosaic of stories come together in this across-the-pond rom-com, starring a huge ensemble cast including Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, and others.
  18. The Hebrew Hammer — According to IMDb, “An orthodox Jewish blaxploitation hero saves Hanukkah from the clutches of Santa Claus’ evil son.” Starring Adam Goldberg, Andy Dick, and Judy Greer.
  19. Little Fockers — Christmas and Hanukkah factor into this third installment of the comic Meet the Parents series, starring Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Robert DeNiro, Blythe Danner, Barbra Streisand, and Owen Wilson.
  20. How the Grinch Stole Christmas — Whether you prefer the animated classic or the 2000 Jim Carrey version, this holiday classic will make your heart grow three sizes.
  21. It’s a Wonderful Life — James Stewart stars as George Bailey, a man in despair who gets help from an angel to realize his life is meaningful and necessary. Widely loved and watched, this film is one of the American Film Institute’s 100 best films ever made.
  22. While You Were Sleeping — Christmastime in Chicago is the backdrop for this family-centric rom-com starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher.
  23. This Christmas — Starring Idris Elba, Regina King, and Loretta Devine, this Christmas comedy/drama details a family’s first holiday together in four years.
  24. Trading Places — Christmas and New Year’s are important characters in this scathingly funny John Landis film, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.
  25. Holiday Inn — Starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby, the classic Holiday tune ‘White Christmas” was written for this film.
  26. White Christmas — Another classic featuring music by Irving Berlin. Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen.
  27. Black Christmas — On the other end of the spectrum, whether the original 1974 or the 2006 remake, this Holiday slasher flick centers on sorority sisters being stalked by a killer during a winter storm.
  28. Scrooged — Bill Murray is wonderfully persnickety in this modern spin on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This ’80s Christmas comedy classic also stars Karen Allen, Carol Kane, and Bobcat Goldthwait.
  29. Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer — This stop motion animation classic tells the story of everyone’s favorite misfit reindeer and his friend Hermey who set out to find a place they’ll be accepted for who they are. It first aired in 1964 and still has yet to get old!
  30. Meet Me in St. Louis — Sure, this classic spans an entire year, but it’s best known for its Christmas scenes, especially Judy Garland’s Esther singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to her sorrowful kid sister, Tootie.
  31. 200 Cigarettes — A ’90s ensemble cast boasting Ben Affleck, Dave Chappelle, Janeane Garofalo, Christina Ricci, Paul Rudd, Courtney Love, Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Martha Plimpton, and others, follows multiple characters throughout New Year’s Eve 1981.
  32. Four Rooms — Set in a hotel on New Year’s Eve, Tim Roth plays a bellhop who appears in all four segments of this bizarre anthology comedy.
  33. When Harry Met Sally — This textbook rom-com spans the seasons, but its capstone New Year’s Eve scene is rightfully famous. (See also, Sleepless in Seattle, with Meg Ryan’s vehicular singing of “Jingle Bells” — “horses, horses, horses, horses … ” for another festive scene.)

How to Make Your Location Home for the Holidays

Gingerbread man and house

Being on assignment over the holidays doesn’t have to mean a blue Christmas!

On assignment and far away from home this holiday season? Don’t let that make you any less merry. Check out these tips for Travel Nurses on how to make your location home for the holidays — and however you decide to celebrate the season, may your days be merry and bright, and may all your travel adventures be a delight!

Do As the Locals Do

Get out and experience the holiday traditions of your current location. Take in a parade, a tree-lighting ceremony, or a holiday lights tour. Find out what local museums, zoos, theaters, and other such cultural hotspots are doing to celebrate the holidays, and you are sure to find a bounty of fun (and sometimes even free) events. Buy gifts from local merchants and artists and export them to friends and family back home — they’ll love getting something so unique that’s not available in your hometown.

Get in the Spirit

Remember that even though you may be far from home, for the most part you can still indulge in your usual, favorite holiday activities — even if that means a little tweaking here and there. Do you always look forward to Aunt Sally’s annual cookie party? Buy a bag of flour, crank up the Christmas tunes, and bake up a big batch of cookies — then share them with your co-workers or neighbors. Love to decorate? Just because it’s not your permanent address doesn’t mean you can’t deck those halls! Even if no one will see it but you, don’t let that stop you from going on a tear with the tinsel or creating a masterpiece of pine. Click here to download and print your very own Travel Nurse tree ornaments. Not into Christmas trees? Hang them in your locker, on your front door, or rearview mirror to get in the spirit.

Volunteer

Whether you volunteer your time or money, getting out and giving to those in need is a great way to get in the holiday spirit. If you’re longing for home, volunteering can help get your mind off of that for a little while. And, while it’s true that you already give so much every day on the job, working with, giving to, or serving people in need is also a great way to gain valuable perspective and give even more to community you’re working in. Contact local shelters and charities, or visit VolunteerMatch.org to find the right opportunity for you.

Celebrate with Others

Just because you may be flying solo on assignment doesn’t mean you have to be alone for the holidays. You could organize a holiday meal or gathering for fellow Travelers. Model it after The Gypsy Nurse’s Thanksgiving gatherings for Travelers and use the power of social media to bring people together, or, simply post a notice at your hospital and/or others in the area and wait for local Travelers to come out of the woodwork.

You could also be a special guest star at someone else’s holiday gathering. Accept invitations from colleagues and new friends in the area. You may not be with friends or family from back home, but you can still feel like part of the family.

Another way to celebrate with others from afar is to have yourself Skyped or FaceTimed into your family and friends’ holiday shindig. Make them pass you around so you get a chance to see everyone — it’s the next best thing to being there.

Or Don’t!

Maybe you are just more of a solo artist! If all you want for Christmas is some me time, create your own new, self-contained holiday tradition. Make a delicious meal for one (or treat yourself to take out), grab a bottle of wine, make an ultra-cozy blanket fort, and have a holiday movie marathon. Home Alone, anyone? Some other classics for marathoning include Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Love Actually, It’s a Wonderful Life, and, of course, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Happy Holidays from your friends at Medical Solutions!

Happy Nurses Week!

Happy Nurses Week from Medical Solutions!

Happy Nurses Week from Medical Solutions!

At Medical Solutions we embrace every possible chance to honor and celebrate our Travelers and hard-working nurses all over. Because of that, Nurses Week is always a REALLY BIG DEAL around here.

The annual week-long observation of Nurses Week is every year from May 6-12, ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

This year as we started brainstorming for ideas to honor, celebrate, entertain, and reward our Travelers during Nurses Week, we realized that the one person we should really be asking was YOU. So, through social media and survey, we asked you, other nurses, and Medical Solutions Travelers how they would to celebrate.

We wish we could shower you with extra PTO and vacations (these were replies we heard a couple times!) … but beyond that here is the slate of activities based upon your feedback for YOUR Nurses Week:

Medical Solutions’ “Your Nurses Week” 2014 celebration will include:

  • The Real Nurses of Nurses Week Gallery — This is a place where Nurses can share a brief bio and a picture explaining how and why they decided to get into nursing, why it’s rewarding, why it’s fun, future career plans within healthcare, why all the hard work is worth it, and more!
  • Share Your Best Nursing Stories — We know our Travelers have some incredible stories! We want to hear them all: the good, the bad, the ugly, the funny, and the sad. Each contribution will automatically enter the storyteller into a drawing for a grand prize 1-year membership to Massage Envy that includes one massage each month (a $720 value) or a second place prize $250 gift card to Scrubs and Beyond. The most up-voted stories will later be included in an e-book of great nursing stories.
  • #yournursesweek — C’mon get happy and social by sharing and searching this hashtag on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Nurses Week eCards — Choose from these four awesome eCards to honor your Nurse friends and colleagues — or post them to your own social media page!
  • Third Annual Nurses of Tomorrow Scholarship Essay Contest — In support of the Nurse leaders of tomorrow, three lucky undergraduate or postgraduate Nurse Scholars will each win $1000 to help out with education costs.

Happy Nurses Week! And thanks so very much for everything you do!

Please come visit us at WeLoveOurNurses.com to learn more about and to participate in all of Medical Solutions’ Nurses Week festivities.
