Say THANKS by GIVING is Back!

Medical Solutions Say Thanks By Giving

Click here to share what you care about and let us say THANKS by GIVING $2,000 to your favorite cause! (You could also win a $100 Amazon gift card for yourself!)

Want to support your favorite cause with a $2,000 donation? Let us help you with that!

In 2016, inspired by our selfless Travelers, Medical Solutions continued our legacy of donating time, money, and services to charitable organizations. Our Travel Nurses give SO much of themselves towards making the world a better place and we’re just trying to do our part, too.

To help achieve that as fully as possible, we’re bringing back Say Thanks By Giving again this year. It’s a very simple, very awesome way you can help us help you and let us say THANKS by GIVING to your favorite cause — plus a little something for you too!

So, tell us: What nonprofit and/or charitable organization matters most to you — and why?

Your favorite cause could be small and local or big and international. It could be a place you’ve personally volunteered, or one that has helped you personally!

Just imagine, if you could help support any charity or nonprofit organization that makes the world a better place, who would it be? Got your answer? Great! Now be sure to submit your cause for consideration before November 30, 2016!

In December, we’ll announce four winners — each of whom will receive a $100 Amazon gift card for themselves AND get $2,000 donated to the cause they nominated!

Last year through Say Thanks By Giving, Medical Solutions donated to:

  • Remote Area Medical — nominated by Traveler Leigha C.
  • Cattaraugus County SPCA — nominated by Traveler Jennifer G.
  • The Cure Starts Now Foundation — nominated by Traveler Erica P.
  • Minnesota Warriors Ice Hockey — nominated by Traveler Gabriel T.

We are so excited to read your submissions again this year and help several of you support the cause that matters most to you! Thank you all so much everything you give of yourself throughout the year as hardworking Travel Nurses.

Congrats to September 2016’s Traveler of the Month and Rising Star!

Travel Nurse Matthew

Matt ain’t afraid of no ghost — nor thrilling Travel Nurse adventure! Congrats to Rising Star Matthew and Traveler of the Month, Shanetha!

Many thanks and congrats to the September 2016 Traveler of the Month, Shanetha S., and also our Rising Star winner, Matthew L.!

Traveler of the Month Shanetha is an RN, BSN working in ICU. She works with Career Consultant Geri K. and is currently on assignment in Texas. Shanetha has been in nursing for five years and started Travel Nursing in 2016.

“One of the best things about Travel Nursing is the opportunity to see the many sides of nursing,” says Shanetha. “This has allowed me to identify the direction that I want to advance my career in from various locations and pursue it.”

In addition to taking on Texas, Shanetha also enjoyed her assignment in San Francisco, where she appreciated the “various outdoor activities and attractions to visit.”

Shanetha is an excellent listener — she can listen for hours without interruption — which also makes her very wise. Here are her top tips to help new or aspiring Travelers succeed:

  1. “I would tell new Travel Nurses to review your contract very carefully before signing it, especially in regards to floating to various units and guaranteed hours.”
  2. “Remember that your attitude truly makes a difference and that not everything is going to be perfect, but in the end, it is only for a short time. So ask questions and be prepared.”
  3. “Lastly, enjoy the days off. Being alone in an unfamiliar area can get very lonely. So, plan something on the days off and relax.”

Rising Star Matthew is an RN, BSN in ER/Trauma and he works with Medical Solutions Career Consultant Joe T. He’s been a nurse for two and a half years, has been traveling for nearly a year, and is currently on assignment in New Hampshire.

So far, Matthew’s favorite location has been Nashville, Tennessee.

“Great people, great city, and close to my hometown,” he says.

Matthew enjoys the many personal and professional opportunities Travel Nursing has provided him.

“It’s a great experience to see different places, different cities, and to exercise different nursing skills with each new environment,” says Matthew. “You also meet a lot of really incredible fellow colleagues, which presents infinite opportunities to learn and teach each other.”

Fun fact about Matthew: When he’s not focused on being a nursing pro, you might find him flexing his pipes!

“I’ve always loved singing,” says Matthew. “I’ve performed at Carnegie Hall and I have a four-octave vocal range — E1 to G#5; obviously working on a five-octave!”

Here are some excellent tips from Matthew to keep folks from singing the new Traveler blues and help them succeed in Travel Nursing:

  1. “Be open minded and don’t be afraid of what’s out there. If you survived nursing school for a few years, you can survive even your least favorite contract for a few months! Chances are, though, that you’ll love each one for its own positives.”
    2. “Always be confident in yourself and your skills; you’re nothing less than an asset and you can make a big difference in the lives of patients and coworkers alike.”
    3. “Your Career Consultant is the best resource you have for anything. You are a team, and he or she wants to help you succeed above all else. Never be afraid to reach out to your recruiter for anything!”

Congratulations again to the Medical Solutions September 2016 Traveler of the Month and Rising Star! Shanetha and Matthew, we are so grateful for your amazing dedication and commitment to providing excellent patient care!

Get Your BSN with Medical Solutions

Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSN theme

Get your BSN with Medical Solutions and you’ll be head of the class when it comes to career opportunities and skills!

By Chris Vinton, Medical Solutions Quality Assurance Specialist

If you already have your Associate’s in nursing, getting a Bachelor’s degree in nursing may seem unnecessary, or even daunting. Some of the classes needed for a BSN aren’t related to nursing, but more and more hospitals across the United States are pushing for all their nurses to have a BSN.

Having an ASN (or ADN) is perfectly fine, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing to stick with that. However, if you ever plan on moving up to nurse management, away from the bedside, or to a higher acuity unit you have little to no experience in, you will need to have your BSN. The BSN degree will open up doors for you that an ASN or ADN degree do not. Having a BSN makes you incredibly more marketable to hospitals and, in fact, more and more hospitals are simply requiring BSN degrees now.

Additionally, earning your BSN will also help you refine and develop your nursing skills. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, patients who are taken care of by a BSN have more positive patient outcomes.

Medical Solutions wants to give all of our nurses the opportunity to attain their BSN, should they want to. That’s why we have a completely online RN to BSN program in partnership with Nebraska Methodist College, which ranked fifth on BestCollege.com’s list of “Best Online RN to BSN Program of 2015”!

The courses are built entirely into your pay package — so no need to worry about student loans — and Nebraska Methodist College gives Medical Solutions nurses in this program a pretty sweet discount on courses, too. Typically, the program lasts about 12-24 months and is very transfer-friendly. If you’ve already taken some steps toward your BSN, this can significantly cut down on the time it takes to earn your BSN. All in all, this program is a fantastic opportunity for any Medical Solutions RN looking to advance her or his career!

If you’re interested in Medical Solutions’ RN to BSN Program, simply get in touch with your Career Consultant. If you don’t already have a dedicated Career Consultant working to help you build the career you desire and deserve, contact us at 866.633.3548 and we will remedy that! Our Career Consultants can help you get the information you need to determine if this is the right step for you, and, once you’re ready, they’ll help you get started.

Got Pink? Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Medical Solutions Pink Out

Medical Solutions’ Omaha office recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness month with our annual Pink Out Day!

Last October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Medical Solutions shared the story of one of our most beloved team members, Amber Barna, BSN, RN, Clinical Director of Nursing at Medical Solutions. Amber is a brave breast cancer survivor, amazing leader, and just generally a wonderfully infectious ray of sunshine within the Medical Solutions family.

Medical Solutions Pink Out

The San Diego office gets their pink on!

This year, Medical Solutions had our annual Pink Out Day recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I’ve shared a few of our Pink Out pics with you in this blog. In honor of Amber’s story, and breast cancer survivors everywhere, I’d also like to share a really cool effort by The Kroger Company to help their employees tell their survivor stories.

At SharingCourage.com, Kroger hosts a collection of “Stories of Courage” from their team members who’ve bravely fought breast cancer. Their stories take them from stunning, scary diagnoses to hard-fought battles to cancer-free status, and each one of them is truly an inspiration! One uniting factor of these stories, much like Amber’s, is that these survivors gain a new appreciation and sense of gratefulness for life.

Here are a few of their quotes:

“Cancer brought me to my knees … then it brought me to my feet.” — Linda

“It’s a beautiful world on the other side of cancer!” — Cindy

“I found a reserve of inner strength that I never thought possible.” — Sharon

“Every day I find another reason to be thankful.” —Tina

“Since breast cancer, I’ve learned not to stress about things in life.” — Carolyn

Medical Solutions Pink Out

The Tupelo team is thinking pink!

Kroger, which has a vast family of stores under different names nationwide, also uses their platform to generate funds for organizations that fight breast cancer. You can enter your current zip code on their site to see how much money they’ve generated for your current local area. Mine was $78,500 in 2015! And all of that money stayed in local organizations that continue to lobby for breast cancer awareness and fight hard for a cure.

As a Traveler, it’s pretty cool to think that you can help make an impact in tons of locations across the nation!

As you recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, make sure to check out Amber’s inspirational story as well as those of the survivors featured by Sharing Courage!

Medical Solutions Traveler of the Month Christine O

Christine chasin’ waterfalls in the good way!

Instead of a car, Christine just bought her first moped in Hawaii to get around town and explore.

The thing she loves most about Travel Nursing?

“I get to travel the globe for my job!,” she says.

Christine offers some great advice for newer Travelers:

  1. Ask a lot of questions of other Travel Nurses.
  2. Research, research, research the places you’re considering.
  3. Have fun and don’t be timid!

Thanks for your hard work and awesome advice, Christine!

Rising Star Lora is a PACU RN who’s been in nursing for six years and works with Medical Solutions Career Consultant Sapan S.

Lora just finished her first Travel Nurse assignment in Providence, Rhode Island — which she found to be a fantastic location.

“I loved the teamwork and skill level of my coworkers,” she says. “Plus, it was a nice city and area to explore.”

Medical Solutions Rising Star Lora C

Rising Star Lora C. LOVES playing outside!

Lora loves playing outside, and fittingly, she’s been a Grand Canyon River Guide for 23 years! She has an eclectic batch of interests — for example, she also plays old-time string band music on both the fiddle and the banjo.

Lora also loves the freedom and exploration that come with being a Travel Nurse, plus she loves constantly learning new things as she goes.

“I love to travel and explore new areas, learning new things professionally and regionally,” she says. “I also love the flexibility and meeting new people.”

Lora advises new Travelers to: “Keep a great attitude, always offer the best nursing care, and be genuine and be yourself.”

The Travel Nurse life is lucky to have ya, Lora! Thanks for everything you do.

Clinical Corner: The Flu, the Flu Vaccine and You

Get Your Flu Shot

It’s that time of year again!

By Chris Vinton, Medical Solutions Quality Assurance Specialist

October is one of the best months of the year. Pumpkin Spice season is in full swing, haunted houses are up and running, the holidays are on the horizon, Halloween costumes are being bought for dogs, the weather is comfortable for the most part, and, for some reason, some stores are already playing “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.”

October also marks the beginning of flu season. Here is what you need to know about the flu, the flu vaccine, and Medical Solutions’ requirements regarding the flu vaccine.

Flu season starts in October and continues until April, though flu activity can last through May. Usually, flu season peaks from December through March. The CDC recommends flu vaccines for anyone over the age of six months — and if you’re reading this, you are either over six months or a very, very impressive baby.

This flu season, the CDC is not recommending the active virus nasal spray. Last season, the nasal spray was nowhere near as effective as the regular flu shot. The flu vaccine will not make you completely immune to the flu, it will help your body build up antibodies and severely reduce the chances of you getting the flu. The vaccine will also not make you sick, the virus will be completely dead by the time it reaches you. If you are allergic to eggs or have had a severe allergic reaction to flu vaccines, gelatin, antibiotics or other ingredients, talk to your primary care physician before considering a flu vaccine.

Woman sick with flu

Get your flu shot and avoid this sneezy, sniffly fate!

Medical Solutions requires a flu vaccination for every traveler in October or before starting a travel assignment during flu season. If you are allergic to the flu vaccine or cannot receive the flu vaccine due to religious reasons, we will require a declination form from your primary care physician or a clergy member. We require a flu vaccination for every Traveler because the flu virus effects the entire country and the flu vaccine should help defend you no matter where you travel to. The flu vaccine does take a few weeks to work, your body slowly builds up antibodies. That is why we require the flu vaccine in October or before starting any assignment during flu season. The better protected you are from the flu, the better protected your patients and coworkers will be!

There is a ton of really cool flu information on the CDC website. Everything from the effectiveness of flu vaccines, to the methodology for the flu information and even a Twitter campaign for flu awareness and vaccines.

For the general overview on the CDC’s flu page, click here.

You can get more info about the flu from the CDC’s flu FAQs and stay current on how the season is affecting the U.S. with their live map of flu activity by state.

Thanks for doing your part to keep the herd healthy! If you have any questions about Medical Solutions’ flu vaccine requirements, please feel free to contact your Career Consultant.

Congrats to July 2016’s Traveler of the Month and Rising Star!

Travel Nurse Lee U. at Moab

July Traveler of the Month, Lee U., explores the Colorado River in beautiful Moab!

Many thanks and congrats to the July 2016 Traveler of the Month, Lee U., and also our Rising Star winner, Meaghan L.!

Traveler of the Month Lee is an RN, BSN, CCRN specializing in ICU and ER. He works with Career Consultant Erin A. and is currently on assignment in beautiful western Oregon. Lee’s in his 21st year of nursing, having traveled six years straight, as well as an additional three years periodically earlier in his career.

Lee travels solo, but returns home often during assignments to see his “wife, kids, cats, dog, rat, chickens, and lizards.” In addition to having a uniquely full house of human and animal loved ones, Lee is also unique in that he only purchases cars with a stick shift. ( Hey, me too, Lee! But we’re definitely a rare breed 🙂 )

Travel Nurse Lee U. Family Yellowstone

Lee’s wife and daughters excitedly “flirt with danger” in front of a buffalo at Yellowstone.

“I truly have not not liked any place I’ve been,” says Lee. “Perhaps some of the hospitals were less desirable, but one of the beauties of Travel Nursing is that we are in a different location regularly and get to explore the area, see new things, meet new people, and this aspect is completely separate from the job.”

“I love Travel Nursing for the fact that I get to meet so many people and am never tethered to weather a circumstance that is painfully undesirable,” says Lee. “As Travelers, we can move on whenever we want.”

Lee offers three great tips for new and prospective Travelers:

  1. “They don’t care very much how it was where you were, so when in Rome do as the Romans do.”
  2. “Anyone can stay positive and smile for 13 weeks. If it’s hard, for whatever reason, fake it. You get to leave soon, they don’t.”
  3. “If you find yourself in a position to Travel Nurse: enjoy yourself, don’t work yourself into the ground (like I often do), mix up making good money with learning about new areas and people … I know that’s pretty obvious, but not to everyone. Enjoy traveling!!”

Thanks for the helpful advice and for being so awesome, Lee!

Travel Nurse Meaghan L

Rising Star Meaghan L. and her adorable pup Casey explore Reflection Lake near Mount Rainier in Washington.

Rising Star Meaghan is an RN specializing in ICU & PACU who’s been in nursing for 8+ years and traveling nearly a year — she was an Active Duty Army Nurse for more than seven years before switching to traveling. Her recruiter at Medical Solutions is Career Consultant Anthony H. and she’s currently on assignment in beautiful Boston.

Meaghan travels with her dog, Casey, who she says is “a great road trip buddy,” and her favorite location in her travels so far has been Seattle, Washington.

“I love the outdoors, and the mountains in Washington are absolutely beautiful,” she says. “The best part of Travel Nursing is having the opportunity to explore different parts of the country.”

Meaghan’s advice to fellow Travelers is to work hard, learn lots, and have fun.

“Travel Nursing is an incredibly rewarding and fun way to visit new areas. However, a steep learning curve and high level of expectation can be slightly intimidating, even to a seasoned nurse,” she says. “Working hard alongside fellow nurses and appreciating the opportunity to learn from different hospitals that I work for are major keys to my success as a Travel Nurse. And of course, of have fun!”

Thanks for the great advice and hard work, Meaghan!

Congratulations again to the Medical Solutions July 2016 Traveler of the Month and Rising Star! Lee and Meaghan, we are so grateful for your hard work, rock star skills, and commitment to providing excellent patient care!
